College football rankings: Week 4 AP Top 25 predictions – Miami makes statement
Week 3 of the 2020 college football season is in the books and the Week 4 AP Top 25 will experience a few changes. What will it look like?
College football’s first month has felt like an appetizer to this point. The first two weeks of the season were pretty tame outside of a few Big 12 upsets, but Week 3 didn’t have the most interesting slate of games.
The day started with Oklahoma State hosting Tulsa and it didn’t look like a potential upset alert matchup, but the Cowboys lost Spencer Sanders early on to an ankle injury and things got a little sticky. He was replaced by Ethan Bullock who struggled and then true freshman Shane Illingworth took over in the second half and led the comeback charge.
Oklahoma State avoided a massive upset but the Big 12’s nightmare start to the season still continued.
New to the top 25 this week, Louisiana looked to prove that a road win over Iowa State wasn’t a fluke but it fell behind 14-0 early and clawed its way back. It took overtime, but the Ragin’ Cajuns picked up the big win and should remain in that top-20 range.
Pitt beat Syracuse in an ACC matchup and while it wasn’t a great offensive day, the Panthers’ defense continues to prove that it’s title-worthy.
The afternoon slate was a little more interesting with No. 14 UCF and a rising Georgia Tech team going at it. The game seemed like a runaway in favor of the Knights but the Yellow Jackets made things interesting, pulling within a touchdown before allowing 21 straight points and losing 49-21. Dillon Gabriel has serious Heisman hype.
The week was capped off by a ranked matchup between No. 18 Louisville and No. 17 Miami. The Cardinals got off to a slow start at home, falling behind 20-6 at halftime as D’Eriq King and Co. stole the show. The Hurricanes held on in the second half and made a huge road statement with the biggest win of the week.
The Big Ten teams will make a return to the AP Top 25 beginning with the poll that comes out next Sunday, Sept. 27, but for one more week, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Penn State and Minnesota remain unranked.
There won’t be many changes near the top of the rankings with most teams getting the week off and the SEC still seven days away from a return, but there could be a shakeup in the middle. Will we see Oklahoma State drop?
