Surefire Starters at Wide Receiver

  • Davante Adams, Green Bay Packers wide receiver, will feast on the newly-aligned Detroit Lions secondary that features No. 1 draft pick, cornerback Jeff Okudah.  Adams caught 14 passes for 156 yards and 2 touchdowns in week 1.  He can meet or exceed those numbers against the Lions.
  • Calvin RIdley, Atlanta Falcons wide receiver, continues to show he belongs in the 1st tier of wide receivers.  Last week he scored 33.9 fantasy football points, which put him second onlt to Davante Adams.  His 9 catches for 130 yards and 2 touchdowns in the season opener should be our expectation every week.
  • Adam Thielen, Minnesota Vikings wide receiver, is one of the most dependable receivers in the NFL.  While QB Kirk Cousins struggle, Thielen ran his routes and caught passes to the tune of 6 receptions for 110 yards and 2 touchdowns and 31 fantasy points.
  • DeAndre Hopkins, Arizona Cardinals wide receiver, proved that good things can happen when you change teams during the offseason.  Hopkins had 14 catches for 151 yards.  The only thing missing was a touchdown, but those wil come as long as he’s matched up with QB Kyler Murray.
  • Robby Anderson, Carolina Panthers wide receiver, had not one, but two touchdown receptions against the Las Vegas Raiders in the season opener. When you combine the touchdowns with his 6 catches for 114 yards, it adds up to 25.4 fantasy points.

Riding the Bench

  • Allen Robinson II, Chicago Bears wide  receiver, had 5 catches for 73 yards and no touchdowns against the Detroit LIons.  Robinson should have had better numbers against the depleted Lions secondary.
  • Jamison Crowder. New York Jets wide receiver, was going to be New York’s game-breaker.  Now he’s injured and there is some debate about how long he will be out.  As my wife would suggest, “stay away from the drama and put him on the bench.”
  • Amari Cooper, Dallas Cowboys wide receiver, is dealing with a sore foot and the failure to score a touchdown in week 1’s 20-17 loss to the Rams.
  • Julian Edelman, New England Patriots wide receiver,  is being a smaller part of the New England offensive scheme.  A stationary Tom Brady used Edelman as a safety valve when he needed a reliable receiver to catch the ball.  Now new quarterback Cam Newton is likely to advance the ball with his feet than put it in the air.

Underrated

  • Tyler Boyd, Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver, has established himself as rookie QB Joe Burrow’s favorite targets.  In  two games,  Boyd has 11 receptions for 104 yards and one touchdown.  He climbed from 7.3 points in the season opener to 20.2 fantasy points in Thursday’s loss to Cleveland.

Overrated

  • Randall Cobb, Houston Texans wide receiver, was added to the Texans roster to help compensate for the loss of DeAndre Hopkins.  IN teh season opener against the Chiefs, he caught 2 pases for 23 yards.  With the exception of Will Fuller V, the entire Houston receiving corps needs to step up its game.

Sleeper WR of the Week

  • Julio Jones, Atlanta Falcons wide receiver, is the perfect receiver to crack the Dallas Cowboys secondary.  Jones quietly led the league in receiving yards with 157 in week 1.  He was targeted 12 times and caught 9 passes.  This week he should score his first touchdown pass against the Cowboys.
