Surefire Starters at TIght End

  • Dallas Goedert, Philadelphia Eagles tight end, dethroned George Kittle for at least one week as the best tight end in the NFC.  Goedert was the Eagles’ most effective weapon against Washington in week 1.  He caught 8 passes for 101 yards and one touchdown.  This week he and Eagles will focus on beating the Los Angeles Rams.
  • Mark Andrews, Baltimore Ravens tight end, did his part by outperforming Travis Kelce in the AFC.  Andrews scored 2 touchdown passes and  and had 5 receptions for 58 yards..  He will add to those numbers against the Houston Texans in week 2.

Riding the Bench

  • Darren Fells, Houston Texans tight end, was expected to be targeted more this year with the departure of DeAndre Hopkins.  He caught the 2 passes thrown to him and gained 19 yards.  If Houston wants to be a playoff contender this year, they will need Fells to contribute.
  • Eric Ebron, Pittsburgh Steelers tight end,  has been inconsistent as a pro tight end.   He underperformed in Detroit, had his highs and lows in Indianapolis, and caught one pass for 18 yards for the Steelers in week 1.

Underrated

  • Noah Fant, Denver Broncos tight end, started the 2020 season with 5 receptions for 81 yards and 1 touchdown catch.  He should have a solid second year in the NFL.

Overrated

  • Rob Gronkowski, Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end, is a valued member of the Bucs team, but he’s not going to compete with Travis Kelce, George Kittle or the other top tight ends in the NFL.  Gronkowski will probably catch some key passes from Tom Brady, but O.J. Howard is the Tampa Bvay starter at tight end.

Sleeper TE of the Week

  • T.J. Hockenson, Detroit Lions tight end, was targeted 5 times, caught all 5 passes for 56 yards.  He even had a touchdown catch.  With wide receiver Kenny Golladay out, Hockenson increases in value in the LIons’ passing game.
