Auburn football has announced team captains for the 2020 season.

The Auburn Tigers are ranked No. 8 in the latest AP Top 25 poll and open the season this Saturday against No. 23 Kentucky. That is followed by a game against No. 4 Georgia so the Tigers have a chance to prove themselves early on.

The season starting soon means it was time to announce team captains. The official announcement came out recently and four players received the honor of being a captain in 2020.

Auburn names four players as captains

Quarterback Bo Nix receives the honor after showing up as a true freshman in 2019 and throwing for 2,542 yards and 16 touchdowns in 13 games. His play helped the Tigers finish 9-4 and clearly, he showed enough leadership to be named a captain at such a young age.

Linebacker K.J. Britt decided to return to school after logging 68 tackles and 3.5 sacks for the defense last season as a junior. Fellow defender Big Kat Bryant also received the captain nod after making 16 tackles and 1.5 sacks last season.

Running back Shaun Shivers rounds out the list as he looks to have a big year in 2020. He ran for 286 yards and three touchdowns in limited action as a sophomore in 2019. Shivers should receive much more than the 55 carries he did last season once the 2020 campaign gets underway.

This is a great honor for all four players and shows their individual standings within the program. Nix is the youngest of the bunch and arguably has the most pressure on his shoulders as the starting quarterback. His voice carries weight and it makes sense why he is one of the few captains.

Auburn finished 9-4 last season and ended the year with a loss to Minnesota in the Outback Bowl. The team is still looking for its first College Football Playoff appearance and these captains are looking to make that happen.
