The Phillies bullpen is among the worst I’ve ever seen

This is to take nothing away from Yadiel Hernandez, who became the oldest MLB player to ever hit their first career home run for a walk-off at 32, but the Phillies bullpen has been historically awful in 2020. This is after they added Brandon Workman and Heath Hembree near the MLB Trade Deadline. The Phillies bullpen still possesses a combined ERA over five, good for worst in the majors.

Workman came in with a chance to split the doubleheader in the bottom of the eighth inning, only to give up the most illogical of walk-off blasts.

Workman left a hanger in a precarious position, and even Hernandez can hit that out

Hernandez made his mark, potentially delivering a brutal blow to a Phillies team that’s already running on fumes. There’s a reason John Kruk is playfully suggesting the Phillies should call 9-1-1 rather than one of their “dependable” relief pitchers to finish off the Washington Nationals. Despite the Nats presence in the cellar of the NL East, they’re still just one year removed from a World Series. The Phillies found that out the hard way.

With the loss, the Phillies fall a full game behind the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Wild Card standings. Without any dependable back-end bullpen help, it could be a bumpy road to the finish.
