Alvin Kamara is now the most valuable player in fantasy entering Week 3
By John Buhler
Alvin Kamara’s fantasy football value could not be higher than right now.
As it turns out, having a top-two pick in your fantasy football snake draft wasn’t a great thing this year. In most leagues, Saquon Barkley of the New York Giants and Christian McCaffrey of the Carolina Panthers went one-two in some order. With Barkley out for the season and McCaffrey going on IR, Alvin Kamara of the New Orleans Saints has emerged as the new RB1 league-wide.
The Fantasy Footballers certainly think so. Though there are other guys worth being considered, such as Ezekiel Elliott of the Dallas Cowboys and Aaron Jones of the Green Bay Packers, once again, it is Kamara’s receiving ability out of the backfield that makes him such a valued fantasy commodity. His value only increased after Michael Thomas suffered an injury in Week 1.

Kamara and Elliott were seen as the RB3 and RB4 in some order entering fantasy draft season. Though both of their NFC teams are at 1-1, Kamara edges out Elliott for the league’s most valuable fantasy player right now, especially in PPR leagues. However, maybe Jones is the guy we’re not pay enough attention to as Kamara’s most formidable challenger for the top spot?
How long will Alvin Kamara stay as the most valuable player in fantasy?
Fate would have it Kamara’s Saints will host Jones’ Packers on Sunday Night Football in Week 3. This is a critical matchup in the upper echelon of the NFC. A win for either team will stand as a major feather in the cap of either team’s season. A loss for the Packers wouldn’t be ideal, but the Saints cannot afford to fall to 1-2 on the year, despite being 1-0 in NFC South play.
If the Saints are going to win, Kamara needs to have a monster day in the New Orleans backfield. The Saints struggled to move the sticks in the latter parts of their Week 2 road loss on Monday Night Football to the Las Vegas Raiders. He may also need a better Week 3 performance out of Drew Brees, as the Saints have to go up against an early NFL MVP contender in Aaron Rodgers.
So for now, Kamara has earned the right to be the most valuable player in 2020 fantasy football. However, it may not be Elliott who ends up challenging him in the coming weeks. Jones’ Packers have favorable matchups in the coming weeks, so he may be the top dog in fantasy going forward, not just in points, but in terms of overall perception. How Week 3 goes will tell us a ton.
