Tight Ends 1-20

Guys, it’s finally happening. The tight end position is deep this year! There were many compelling breakout candidates headed into the season and so many of them have shown promise so far. I’m confident in starting any of the top 14 options in a decent matchup, which is not something I expected to say going into the season.

My favorite mid-round tight end target Tyler Higbee feasted last week, posting the TE1 score in 3-touchdown showing against the Eagles. He should remain an every-week option for the remainder of the season, as he’s dominating snaps over Garrett Everett and appears to be a focal point of the Rams offense. I’m placing him over Zach Ertz ROS because if contract negotiations are to be believed, the Eagles seem to be moving toward Dallas Goedert as their tight end of the future. Speaking of Goedert, he’s racked up 66 targets in his past 8 games, or a 132 target 16-game pace. He should absolutely be valued as a TE1 and can be grabbed at a value after a lackluster Week 2.

Hayden Hurst, Jonnu Smith, Mike Gesicki, Noah Fant, T.J. Hockenson are all capable starters, which decreases the value of owning Travis Kelce or George Kittle. If you own a top tight end and have a capable backup, consider trading the top-tier guy for value at another position. If you somehow don’t have one of these fringe TE1-tier guys, you can still grab them at a relatively value this early in the season.

I would bet that Jonnu, Gesicki and Fant trend upward next week, as Gesicki and Smith have good matchups and Fant and Smith benefit from injuries to their team’s star wideouts. If any of these guys should be expected to trend downwards, it might be T.J. Hockenson, as we haven’t seen him produce consistently with Kenny Golladay in the lineup.
