Texas football star quarterback Sam Ehlinger plays a similar game to former Heisman winner Tim Tebow and the former Gators star explains what makes him so dangerous.

If you watch Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger play, you may be reminded of a past dual-threat quarterback who was built similarly and did similar eye-opening things on the football field.

Ehlinger has elicited comparisons to former Florida Gators quarterback Tim Tebow with his ability to throw as well as truck would-be tacklers like a fullback. The comparisons are lofty for Ehlinger who is in the thick of the Heisman race who would just love to win a Big 12 title and get the Longhorns to a College Football Playoff and a chance to win a national championship.

After all, Tebow won a pair of national titles at Florida and was a three-time finisher in the top-five of Heisman voting, winning in 2007. So who better to ask about what Ehlinger brings to the field than the person he’s often compared to?

Ehlinger was named to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team after his efforts raised nearly $200,000 for relief organizations amid COVID-19 and helped lead a march in Austin to support the Black Lives Matter movement. Tebow, who is also an alum of the Good Works Team, spoke to me about Ehlinger’s game and why he’s one of the most dangerous players in college football.

“I think he’s a great player, but also so much depends on the team around him,” Tebow said when asked about how far Ehlinger can take Texas. “It depends on their defense, their receivers helping him out, the offensive line, so many things coming together. How are they going to handle all the regimens and protocols of COVID? So there are so many things that come into play.”

Winning a Heisman Trophy is an individual award but as Tebow recognizes, it’s not possible without your entire team helping you in the process. The same is true when it comes to winning a national championship. No matter how good a player is, he still needs the entire roster and coaching staff to come together to reach that ultimate goal. And in a season where things can be disrupted due to things outside your control, it’s important to focus on what he can control.

Good thing for Ehlinger and Texas football fans, he can control a lot, on the football field — as seen with his five touchdowns and more than 400 yards in his 2020 season debut vs. UTEP.

“I think that he has so many things that keep a defense on their heels,” Tebow said. “Whether that’s his ability to get the ball out quick or throw a really good deep ball or his ability to get outside on the edge or to run over someone up the middle, he just really keeps defenses on their heels. Because of that, I think he’s one of the most dangerous guys in college football.”

With an endorsement from one of the best college football players to ever lace up the cleats, look for Ehlinger to showcase why Tebow has such a high opinion of him the rest of the season, including Saturday’s game vs. Texas Tech.
