Cowboys injury update: Tyron Smith, DeMarcus Lawrence in question vs. Seahawks

Tyron Smith and DeMarcus Lawrence may not be available for the Cowboys in Week 3.

The Dallas Cowboys could take on the Seattle Seahawks without two key figures in the trenches, one on each side of the ball.

On Friday, head coach Mike McCarthy tagged veteran left tackle Tyron Smith and defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence as questionable for the upcoming game.

He also confirmed cornerback Chidobe Awuzie will be out with a hamstring injury, according to Michael Gehiken of the Dallas Morning News.

The Cowboys are hurting heading into the Seahawks game.

Smith missed last week’s narrow win over the Falcons with a neck problem, forcing the Cowboys to start Brandon Knight at left tackle. Even if Knight did an admirable job filling in for the future Hall of Famer, there’s simply no replacing Smith’s ability.

McCarthy and company will want the veteran back as soon as possible, but they aren’t in control when it comes to the neck injury.

Lawrence started at defensive end but was limited in the second half against Atlanta after tweaking his knee. That concern kept him out of practice for much of the week and could put his prospects for starting in Seattle in jeopardy.

If Lawrence can’t go, the Cowboys would likely give the start to Everson Griffen.

Dallas lost their first outing of the season to the Rams by just three points before sneaking past the Falcons 40-39 thanks to a 17-point fourth-quarter comeback.

The Seahawks are likely to present an even bigger challenge this weekend.

On the positive side, Seattle has its own problems with injuries on defense, so the prospect of Smith missing out could be less of a worry. However, the Cowboys will need their defensive front at their best to contain Russell Wilson and company.
