As college football welcomes the SEC back to action in Week 4, four teams out of the conference find themselves on upset alert.
Without question, it’s been great to have college football back in our lives over the last three weeks, especially with the ACC and Big 12 beginning their seasons. But if we’re truly being honest with ourselves, it now feels like the 2020 season is 100 percent getting underway in Week 4 now that the 14 teams in the SEC begin their campaigns. You can mock the “it just means more” mentality but it undeniably feels that way this year.
Part of the reason for that is likely due to the fact that eight of the teams in the SEC are ranked in the AP Top 25 entering college football Week 4. But with a new season that has been so dramatically affected by COVID-19, eight ranked teams taking the field for the first time only increases the chances for an upset on Saturday.
Three teams that won’t be in that boat are the Alabama Crimson Tide, Georgia Bulldogs and Texas A&M Aggies, ranked No. 2, No. 4 and No. 10 in the country, respectively. Considering that three of the best teams in the conference are taking on three of the lesser teams in the SEC, it’s hard to say that any of them are on upset alert.
Many of their conference foes, however, aren’t in the same boat. Be it because of tough matchups, the effects of this offseason, dealing with departed talent or a combination of all those factors, there are a number of SEC teams who will begin the year sounding the alarm as they are on upset alert.
They aren’t the only conference with a team in this regard but they do dominant the conversation in that regard. With that in mind, let’s go ahead and put these five teams on upset alert in college football Week 4.
