Willson Contreras’s wins for most epic bat flip ever (Video)
Willson Contreras’s bat flip after a homer against the White Sox was epic.
There are bat flips. And then there are I’m-embarrasing-you-for-all-generations bat flips.
Willson Contreras produced the latter on Friday night against the White Sox.
After hitting a three-run home run off Dylan Cease in the third inning to put the Cubs up 4-0, Contreras launched his bat into space where it went into orbit around the international space station, probably.
The bat was in the air almost as long as the ball on its flight to the bleachers.
If that’s not the most epic bat flip in the majors this year, we don’t know what is.
Wilson Contreras didn’t hold back on his bat flip against the White Sox.
The competition for Contreras on the bat flip front on Friday was fierce. Ronald Acuña Jr. blasted a 495-foot home run for the Braves and coolly flipped his bat as well.
But Contreras’s effort was something else.
If you are a Cubs fan, you probably loved it more than you love your pets. If you are a White Sox fan you probably think it was the most despicable thing you’ve seen this year (in baseball, it is 2020 after all).
If you’re a casual fan you may be wondering if the stats guys can do tracking on the bat as well as the ball. Acuña’s homer was the longest in MLB this year, but seriously, has anyone flipped their bat higher than Contreras?
Both the Cubs and the White Sox have clinched spots in the MLB playoffs this year, so Friday’s game isn’t do-or-die for either on that front. That doesn’t mean the in-city rivals don’t want to get one up over on the other, especially with standings still in play.
The Cubs are looking to clinch the NL Central in this final series of the regular season while the White Sox are in a battle with the Minnesota Twins for the AL Central. They trailed by one game going into Friday night.
