Who will be the Chicago Bears quarterback of the future?
The Chicago Bears are in dire need of a franchise quarterback after Mitchell Trubisky was benched in favor of Nick Foles against the Falcons.
It’s over; the Mitchell Trubisky era in Chicago seemingly came to an end in Week 3. After a putrid start against the Falcons, Trubisky was benched and then boxed out of the Bears’ future when Nick Foles took Chicago on a comeback that has fans everywhere in awe.
The win was one thing, but the real victory is this seems to seal the deal that Trubisky is not the future in Chicago. So now Bears fans are wondering who is?
Foles obviously isn’t the future for this team, although he could be a great bridge between the end of the Trubisky era to whatever is next. The question begs then, who will be the team’s starter next season? Here’s a look at four players who could take over Matt Nagy’s offense.
Trevor Lawrence would be a dream addition for the Chicago Bears. The only question is, will they be able to get him to town? If Chicago did want that to happen, the tank would need to start as soon as possible. After coming from behind to beat the Falcons, things aren’t looking great there.
However, if they’re serious about potentially drafting Lawrence, they better hope for the Cincinnati Bengals to get the No. 1 overall pick again in 2021. If that’s the case, and with Joe Burrow with the Bengals, they very well could look to trade down.
If that’s the case, the Bears could swoop in and make them a deal they can’t refuse. Lawrence, who won the National Championship with Clemson as a true freshman, is a generational talent. He’s already looked brilliant thus far this campaign and helped the Tigers get to the National Championship Game last season.
Despite losing to LSU in that matchup, Lawrence is a true winner. He’s got NFL success written all over him. Whichever team ends up drafting him will no doubt have their signal-caller for years and years. The Bears bringing him to town would finally five the fanbase a quarterback to be excited about.
Things just never quite worked out for Jameis Winston with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Now, though, despite him not being a starter anymore, he’s in an ideal situation with the New Orleans Saints this campaign.
The veteran quarterback signed a one-year deal with the Saints to be Drew Brees’ backup. So, this season, he’s learning behind one of the best signal-callers the game has ever seen. That’s a pretty sweet deal. At the same time, Winston is not going to spend the rest of his pro career as a backup.
He’s got a competitive drive and wants to be running an offense. Getting a second chance as the main man in town for a team is something he’s hoping will happen. Why not with the Bears? They could sign him to a low-risk, high-reward kind of a contract.
Let’s not forget, Winston did turn plenty of heads early on in his career. During his five years with the Bucs, he threw for 19,737 yards and 121 touchdowns. Given the right situation, Winston could get his career back on the right track. Chicago would certainly be an intriguing option.
While all the attention in the college football world may be going to guys like Lawrence, Justin Fields and Spencer Rattler, Florida quarterback Kyle Trask put on a show in Florida’s season-opener against Ole Miss. Just how great was Trask in that victory over the Rebels?
He finished the day throwing for 416 yards and six touchdowns. That’s not a typo, folks. Trask put up video game-type numbers and tore up the Ole Miss defense in the process. Checking in at 6-foot-5, 240 pounds, he’s got the prototypical size of what you’re looking for in a quarterback.
For the Chicago Bears, they’d no doubt be wise to give him a strong look if he’s on the board when it’s time for them to draft. As previously mentioned, there’s just no way this team can move forward with either Trubisky or Foles. If the team is serious about competing for NFC North titles and trying to get back to the Super Bowl, they’re going to need to find a standout quarterback.
While drafting Trubisky so high didn’t work out for them, that doesn’t mean the same will be the case for Trask if he ends up making his way to the Windy City to make plays for the Bears.
Last but not least, let’s not forget about North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance, who really announced himself as a prospect to keep an eye on after his brilliant 2019 season leading things for the Bison.
As a redshirt-freshman last campaign, the 6-foot-4, 226-pounder blew up, throwing for 2,786 yards and 28 touchdowns. Now at least three years removed from high school, he’s of course eligible for the NFL Draft and could prove to be a steal for the Bears if he’s available.
What makes Lance so special too are his dual-threat abilities. Not only does he have an impressive arm, but he can also punish opposing defenses with his excellent speed. In addition to his impressive numbers throwing the pigskin last year, he added 1,100 rushing yards and 14 more scores.
Should he land with the Bears, he could really open up Nagy’s playbook because of his wheels. We’ve seen the way the game has changed in recent years with dual-threat quarterbacks starting to take over. Lamar Jackson is a nightmare for teams to try and prepare for.
While we’re not saying Lance is the next Jackson, his speed is something that of course needs to be mentioned leading up to the NFL Draft. Bears fans haven’t seen a quarterback like that run the show in Chicago yet. Lance could be the first and change things altogether for the Bears.
