8. Kyle Pitts, TE, Florida

Plenty of people would’ve referred to Kyle Pitts as the best tight end in college football coming into the 2020 season. After all, the 6-foot-6, 240-pounder had 649 yards and five touchdowns last year and got more dangerous as the year went on. But even the most ardent supporters of the pass-catcher couldn’t have expected the monstrous performance he put forth against Ole Miss is the Gators’ season-opener.

Pitts torched the Rebels all afternoon in a 51-35 shootout, ending the day with eight catches for 170 yards and four touchdowns, including a 71-yard bomb. He legitimately looked un-coverable with his combination of size and athleticism. It’s a longshot for a tight end to be heavily in the Heisman race but, if this is a sign of things to come, then Pitts is going to be impossible to ignore.

7. Najee Harris, RB, Alabama

Especially with the pedestrian start to the season by Chuba Hubbard, the best chance for a running back to win the Heisman Trophy in the 2020 season seemed to be Alabama’s Najee Harris taking the reins and riding hard into the battle. And in the Crimson Tide’s dominant season-opening win against Missouri, the running back certainly did his part to make a strong first impression.

Harris only had 17 carries for 98 yards — though that was against one of the better linebacker corps in the country — but found the end zone three times. He looked as if he was picking up right where he left off after a strong conclusion to his 2019 campaign and, therefore, he did what he needed to so he could get off on the right foot in the Heisman race.
