Blue Jays vs Rays MLB live stream reddit for Game 1 of Wild Card Series
By Mark Powell
The Toronto Blue Jays and Tampa Bay Rays face off in the first game of their Wild Card Series
Rather than pitching their ace, free agent acquisition Hyun-Jin Ryu, in the opening game of their Wild Card series against the heavily-favored Tampa Bay Rays, Charlie Montoyo is going with Matt Shoemaker, who was 0-1 with a 4.71 ERA in 2020. Ryu will pitch in Game 2, with Montoyo arguing that win or loss, they’d rather have their best pitcher ready on Wednesday to either close out the favored Rays or keep their playoff hopes alive. It’s a flawed strategy, but one Ryu and the Jays can get behind.
Despite Toronto handing Ryu $80 million this offseason and opting not to have him open the postseason, these Jays are playing with house money after securing the eighth seed behind a youth movement of emerging stars. Bo Bichette, Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. and Cavan Biggio are a few seasons away from really leaving their mark on the AL East. But don’t tell them that.
The Rays, meanwhile, were the best team in the American League from start to finish. They hold the clear advantage in this series, and their player development and wise front office decisions have landed them a solid lineup and elite pitching staff. Blake Snell will pitch Game 1, with Tyler Glasnow likely going in Game 2. Tampa Bay acquired Glasnow as part of the infamous Chris Archer trade, which favored the Rays greatly.
Brandon Lowe leads the Rays in batting average, home runs and RBI this season. He’s the catalyst for their offense, and he’ll be the main target for Blue Jays pitching as the look to avoid giving up an early lead to Tampa.
