The New York Yankees and Cleveland Indians face off in Game 1 of their Wild Card series

Cleveland finished the season hot, and claimed the second-place position in the AL Central to help them notch the fourth seed in the American League expanded postseason. That timely play won them a date with the Yankees, a feat few teams would encourage.

Game 1 features Shane Bieber, the likely Cy Young award winner in the American League, against Gerrit Cole, who was the favorite for the award entering the season. The Yankees acquired Cole to finally get their pitching staff over the hump. Despite some trouble keeping the ball in the park at times this season, Cole has delivered and then some to a Yankees staff that needed a true leader. Bieber, meanwhile, won the AL pitching triple crown. No big deal.

Cleveland faces some major question marks this offseason, first and foremost what to do with franchise cornerstone Francisco Lindor. An Indians postseason run could impact the direction of the franchise, which to this point looks to be headed towards middling. Lindor and Jose Ramirez bolster a strong Indians lineup, as the latter is in the discussion for AL MVP.

The Yankees bats are as strong as always. DJ LeMahieu led the American League in batting, while Luke Voit deserves more attention than he’s getting.
