Game 1 between the New York Yankees and Cleveland Indians was supposed to be a pitcher’s duel between Gerrit Cole and Shane Bieber. The latter is the clear favorite to win the American League Cy Young Award and the hype was high.

Bieber proceeded to allow a two-run home run to Aaron Judge in the top of the first and was pulled after 4.2 innings with seven earned runs to his name. The Yankees offense finished the game with 15 hits and 12 runs in a shocking outcome given the initial storylines. Now the Indians are looking to avoid being swept Wednesday night.

What to watch for in Yankees-Indians Game 2

Another great pitching matchup is set to take place, at least on paper. The Indians will have Carlos Carrasco on the mound looking to keep the season alive against Masahiro Tanaka. The Yankees pitcher could be making his final start for the team if they lose the series, so there is plenty of added motivation.

Allowing 12 runs is obviously inexcusable. But the Indians also need to step up on offense and stop relying on the pitchers to be perfect. Josh Naylor accounted for four of the team’s eight hits in Game 1 and was involved in scoring or driving in all three runs.

Francisco Lindor went 0-4 with two strikeouts and Carlos Santana did the same. The Indians offense has a habit of going quiet in October since 2017. Meanwhile, the Yankees saw eight players record a hit Tuesday night and seven players drove in at least one run.

Cleveland fans are hoping Lindor, Santana, and MVP candidate Jose Ramirez can step up and show some fight to avoid another quiet postseason exit. Fans in New York saw their team take down the best pitcher in baseball, so optimism should be high heading into Game 2.
