Anthony Rizzo had some thoughts after he struck out looking.
The Chicago Cubs and Miami Marlins are back in action Friday after Thursday’s game was postponed due to rain. The Cubs are fighting to keep their season alive against a Marlins team with nothing to lose.
This makes every at-bat that much more important for a team that may be playing its final game with the current core of players. Anthony Rizzo is included in that group and watched a questionable pitch called a strike to ring him up. He let the umpire know he disagreed with the call.

This pitch appeared to just hit the zone on the box provided by the broadcast. However, there was some epic framing from catcher Chad Wallach that may have influenced the late call. An umpire taking more than one second to make a call will usually result in anger from whoever is at the plate. That is all part of the job.
The Cubs offense is seeking any sort of boost after scoring one run in Game 1 and getting only four hits. The team struck-out seven times Wednesday and got off to a bad start Friday with two strikeouts in the first inning. Rizzo’s was the second.
Rizzo was one of several Cubs to have a rough regular season. He slashed .222/.342/.414 and 11 home runs in what was an unusual year for the offense. That may explain why the bats are cold against the Marlins so far in this best-of-three series.

Rizzo can get mad at close calls all he wants. That won’t change the fact he needs to protect with two strikes and swing the bat so his team can have a chance to score more than one run and extend the season to Saturday.
