Jason Peters injury is another vital blow to Eagles offense

The Eagles offense just can’t catch a break
The Eagles offensive line is already running on fumes. They moved Jason Peters over to his native tackle position before the season began, despite plans to play him at left guard. Peters and the Eagles restructured his contract to reflect further risk. On Saturday, however, it was revealed that the Eagles would be placing the veteran on injured reserved with a toe injury, which the medical staff discovered in a recent MRI.
Peters was sent home sick this week, but the illness reportedly was not COVID-19 related. After feeling some discomfort on Friday, he underwent the MRI, where the Eagles discovered said toe issue.
The Eagles offensive line was already struggling to protect Carson Wentz
Wentz isn’t doing his offensive line any favors, either, by holding onto the ball too long. The Eagles offense has looked like a shell of itself, and some have called for Doug Pederson to bench the franchise cornerstone Wentz in favor of Jalen Hurts, who was selected in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. However, the Eagles view Hurts as more of a Taysom Hill type for now, rather than a legitimate option behind center.
Without Peters, Jordan Mailata will step in as left tackle, per the Eagles depth chart. Mailata is a former seventh-round pick of the Eagles back in 2018, who has overcome the odds and developed into a serviceable backup for Philly. He’ll have big shoes to fill on Sunday.
