Mac Jones elite deep ball will make Alabama fans forget about Tua…sort of

Surprise! Alabama is still very good at football. Pandemic or not, Nick Saban is always going to field one of the best college football teams in the country. It’s the one thing 2020 cannot challenge and screw up for the rest of us.

The Crimson Tide took care of business in their opening game against Missouri, and faced their first true challenge in the No. 13-ranked Texas A&M Aggies. Early on, Jones made a statement that he can be counted on to make some of the throws Alabama fans became accustomed to just last season.

Jones is not Tua, but he doesn’t have to be

While Alabama’s depth chart was a question at several positions before the season, we knew Jones was going to enter the year as starter and Jaylen Waddle and Devonta Smith would become his main targets. Behind Waddle and Smith, though, there’s more uncertainty. Enter John Metchie.

Metchie is a rising sophomore who is already making an impact as a deep threat in Tuscaloosa. Against Missouri, he had two catches for 42 yards, which averages out to 21 yards-per-reception. On Saturday, his sole catch thus far went for a stunning 78 yards. As if the Tide needed more weapons offensively.

A&M should be improved this season under Jimbo Fisher, but they’re not yet on Alabama’s level. Hell, no one is, and Fisher can’t yet receive blame for that. Few teams in the SEC can rival Bama’s blend of experience and newfound talent in recruiting year in and year out, though Georgia, Auburn and Florida are trying, desperately.

If Jones lives up to what his season-plus of statistics suggest he can be, the Crimson Tide are a force to be reckoned with not just as likely SEC champs, but in the College Football Playoff as well.
