Swiss Skydiver wins 2020 Preakness Stakes in photo finish: Results, highlights, trifecta, exacta, superfecta payouts
By Scott Rogust
The final leg of the 2020 Triple Crown concluded on Saturday, as Swiss Skydiver won the Preakness Stakes.
The 145th Preakness Stakes was like no other. Normally, the event takes place on the third Saturday of May as the second-leg of the Triple Crown, but it was postponed until Oct. 3 due to the coronavirus pandemic. The favorite entering the race was Authentic, the winner of the Kentucky Derby just last month, with 9-5 odds. However, Authentic lost in the most heartbreaking way imaginable.
Swiss Skydiver edged out the Bob Baffert-trained horse with a nose-to-nose finish to win the Preakness. Perhaps more importantly, Swiss Skydiver is the first filly to win the race since Rachel Alexandra did so back in 2009!
Swiss Skydiver had a massive payout
Just like the Belmont Stakes and the Kentucky Derby, there were no fans in attendance for the race with the purpose of preventing a potential outbreak of COVID-19.
Art Collector (5-2 odds) made his return to the track after pulling out of the Kentucky Derby due to an ankle injury. Thousand Words also entered the Preakness with favorable odds (6-1), a full month after being a late scratch in the derby after flipping in the paddock. However, they just couldn’t pull out the victory, as Swiss Skydiver defeated “the boys club.”
