The Heisman watch is heating up with Kyle Trask putting heat on Trevor Lawrence for the top spot in the Heisman rankings after Week 5.

No matter what’s happened through the first five weeks of the 2020 college football season already, the Heisman Trophy race is only going to get stranger the closer to the winter that we get. With the Big Ten premiering in late October and the Pac-12 soon behind them in early November, you have to wonder what the players in each of those conferences — especially someone such as Justin Fields — would have to do to take home the Heisman.

While fans of chaos can certainly look forward to that, the race for the biggest individual award in college football has already been calamitous over the first five games of the year. Every week, apparent favorites have been letdowns while new potential candidates have popped up on the radar. And Week 5 was a prime example of that.

There’s perhaps no better example of a big drop-off that Mississippi State quarterback K.J. Costello. After his 600+ yards and five scores in an upset of LSU last week, he followed that up with a three-interception stinker as his Bulldogs got knocked off by Arkansas in Starkville.

Outside of Costello, Oklahoma redshirt freshman quarterback Spencer Rattler is clearly in a position that does him no favors. He’s been fantastic but, with the Sooners suffering another loss, the young signal-caller clearly has too much on his shoulders with no defense and no run game to speak of. Moreover, UCF quarterback Dillon Gabriel struggled as the Knights were upset on Saturday as well.

But all of these struggles simply opened the door for other potential candidates to state their case and get their foot in the door. So with plenty of movement in comparison to last week, let’s dive into the Heisman rankings after Week 5 of the 2020 college football season.
