Heisman rankings after Week 5: Kyle Trask overtaking Trevor Lawrence?
Heisman candidate No. 8: Shane Buechele, QB, SMU
Another team that pulled off a nice upset on Saturday, the SMU Mustangs remained perfect on the year as they moved to 4-0 with a 30-27 win over Memphis. And though the SMU rushing attack has been awesome in previous weeks, it was quarterback Shane Buechele who carried the offense and kept putting up big-time numbers for the galloping Mustangs.
Buechele finished the win throwing for 474 yards with three touchdowns and no turnovers, which is just another nice outing for the senior signal-caller. The former Texas quarterback has now thrown for 1,326 yards, 10 scores and two interceptions, along with one rushing touchdowns, through four games. If he keeps that up and SMU keeps winning, he’s going to have a strong Heisman Trophy case.
Heisman candidate No. 7: Jaylen Waddle, WR, Alabama
In no world was Jaylen Waddle an unknown commodity coming into the 2020 college football season. Having said that, he truly hadn’t gotten the opportunity to showcase everything he’s capable of doing to opposing defenses. Through two games — and two emphatic victories for the Alabama Crimson Tide — that’s changing in a hurry.
In a 28-point win over Texas A&M, the speedy wideout caught five passes for 142 yards and a touchdown. This came one week after Waddle burned Missouri for eight receptions, 134 yards and two touchdowns. If he keeps taking the top off of defenses and makes a few plays as a returner this season, Waddle is only going to keep climbing these rankings.
