2020 NFL power rankings, Week 5: Browns explode, Jets implode
The NFL season reached the quarter poll for most of the team in the league.
For the second consecutive year, seven NFL teams won their first three games. Three of those clubs were in action on Sunday and two of them remained perfect. Meanwhile, the pandemic had an effect on the Week 4 schedule. But there was still plenty of action and scoring during another wild series of games.
It was a disastrous evening for the Green and White in so many ways as the club dropped to 0-4 and has now allowed 31-plus points in three consecutive games. It was quite the evening for veteran cornerback Pierre Desir, who joined the team this offseason after being released by the Colts. He was burned several times but also picked off two passes – returning one for a score. But too many penalties, many of the personal foul variety, were costly.
For the first time this season, Joe Judge’s club did not commit multiple turnovers. But the Giants also failed to score a touchdown and settled for three field goals by veteran Graham Gano. Daniel Jones was sacked five times and picked off once. Credit to New York’s defense for limiting Los Angeles to 240 total yards. Jones ran for 45 yards and did fumble once. The team has scored only 47 points in four games this year and owns a 12-40 mark since ’17.
Dan Quinn’s winless club has a date with the 3-0 Packers on Monday night and talk about two teams headed in the opposite direction? After three weeks of play, the Packers had scored an NFL-high 122 points while the Falcons had allowed a league-high 108 points – 74 in the second half as the club has squandered big leads in the fourth quarter twice in three weeks. Despite five takeaways in three games, the Falcons have already allowed 14 offensive TDs.
The fall continues for the reigning division champs. Horrendous tackling by Anthony Weaver’s defense made for another rough outing. The Texans entered Week 4 dead last in the NFL in rushing defense and wound up allowing 162 yards on the ground and three touchdowns on 40 attempts. Houston also gave up a pair of 100-yard receiving performances and 410 total yards of offense to a Vikings’ team that had not won a game this year before Sunday.
