Bill O’Brien has finally, mercifully, been let go from the Houston Texans
It was a long time coming. Deshaun Watson is dancing in his living room right now. Champagne for all of Houston!
O’Brien made some truly remarkable moves in his final year as Texans coach and, for some reason, general manager. The decisions we’re referring to don’t shine a positive light on BOB or the Texans organization, but alas, he finally dug his own grave. Perhaps it was trading DeAndre Hopkins for a pile of nothing, or going back-and-forth on play-calling duties for the 100th time, but something convinced the McNair family to pull the trigger. An 0-4 start to the season didn’t help matters.
BOB became an infamous character on NFL Twitter by the end of his tenure in Houston, and he was embraced as the worst of the worst among head coaches on a weekly basis. His firing was celebrated, but also mourned by those who enjoyed his near-daily gaffs.

Raise your hand if you had Bill O’Brien fired before Adam Gase or Dan Quinn. Put your hand down, liar.

Over the past 16 months, the Texans gave Bill O'Brien power to:
— Robert Mays (@robertmays) October 5, 2020
- Trade away most of their draft picks
- Hand out a bunch of bad extensions and free-agent deals
- Give away the best WR in the NFL
All to fire him 4 games into the season. That is incredible.

Is it fair to pin all of the Texans’ struggles this season on O’Brien? Not so much. But it sounds like he was coaching for his job this past weekend against the previously winless Minnesota Vikings. This explains why he put himself back in charge of play-calling just a quarter of the way into the regular season.
O’Brien isn’t why the Texans are 0-4, especially considering just how tough their schedule was to start the season. However, the roster is constructed as is to his liking. He was awarded GM duties for quite some time now, and that’s hasn’t worked out to the Texans favor. Giving him total control of an organization seemed like a bold idea at the time. Now, Houston is admitting their mistake and moving forward.
