Chris Jones among Chiefs inactives against Patriots
By John Buhler
Chris Jones will not play for the Kansas City Chiefs vs. the New England Patriots.
Chris Jones is among the inactives for the Kansas City Chiefs‘ game vs. the New England Patriots.
Even with an extra day of rest to play this now primetime game vs. the Patriots, Jones has been ruled out of the Chiefs’ Week 4 game due to a groin injury. While he played in the Chiefs’ first three games of the season, he’s going to have to watch the rest of this one from the sidelines at Arrowhead Stadium. How will his absence impact the Chiefs defense and Patriots offense?
It won’t matter because Brian Hoyer is starting at quarterback for New England.
Had the Patriots been able to start Cam Newton at quarterback this week, not having Jones in there would have been a huge loss for the Chiefs. Newton is a big and punishing runner from the quarterback position. Even for a great defensive linemen like Jones, he would be a problem. However, Newton did not make the trip to Kansas City after testing positive for the coronavirus.
Starting in place of Newton is not Jarrett Stidham, but rather Brian Hoyer. In his journeyman career, Hoyer has started plenty of games, most notably with the Cleveland Browns, the Houston Texans and the San Francisco 49ers. Though he has been with the Patriots longer than anywhere, he’s largely held a clipboard backing up Tom Brady and Newton. He has his work cut out for him.
Keeping Jones out of Week 4 makes sense as the Chiefs will need him later down the line.
