The Yankees and Rays are squaring off in the postseason for the first time ever.
The Tampa Bay Rays were the only American League team to reach 40 wins this season. The club won the AL East by seven games over their ALDS opponent, the New York Yankees.
The Yankees had a solid year and just dismantled the Cleveland Indians on the road in last week’s best-of-three first round. Now they are looking to make up for the 2-8 record against the Rays in the regular season. The series gets underway Monday night from Petco Park in San Diego.
What to watch for in Game 1
The Rays have been dominant all year and there is no reason why that should stop now. Tampa beat the Toronto Blue Jays by a combined score of 11-3 in the first round and now another AL East foe awaits.
This is the first time both teams are squaring off in the postseason. This is only the sixth time the Rays have made the playoffs, which is not insane considering the team began play in 1998 and didn’t do much winning until 2008. That was also the last time the Rays advanced beyond the ALDS.
The Yankees should be plenty confident after making Cy Young favorite Shane Bieber look like a minor league pitcher last week. New York marched into Cleveland and left the Indians wondering what happened. The Yankees offense scored at least 10 runs in both games and that was against what was supposed to be one of the best pitching staffs in baseball.
Monday’s Game 1 features another pitching duel, at least on paper. Gerrit Cole is squaring off against Blake Snell. Both picked up wins last round and did not face too much stress in their respective starts.
Playing better against the Rays could have kept the Yankees in the hunt for the AL East crown. However, that was not the case and it all worked out as both teams are in the ALDS at a neutral site in San Diego.
