5 potential quarterbacks of the future for the Washington football team
1. Dak Prescott
After Amari Cooper re-signed with the Cowboys, a report surfaced that Washington offered him more money. Rivera confirmed they pursued Cooper “all the way until the end.” If nothing else, Rivera is trying to install expectations and a win-now mentality rare to the long-running dysfunctional franchise.
The Cowboys are playing a dangerous game with Prescott, who shy of slow starts for the offense as a whole has not been the problem in a 1-3 start that could easily be 0-4. He has held his ground in terms of knowing his market value, regardless of what anyone thinks about where he is in the quarterback hierarchy (good but not great?).
Prescott is playing on the franchise tag this year, but the cost of tagging him again obviously goes up next year and the likelihood of a lower salary cap makes the cost more prohibitive.
Via Over The Cap, Washington currently has the fifth-most cap space for 2021. Spotrac has similar numbers, with Washington carrying the sixth-most cap space for 2021 right now.
Washington may be willing to pony up for Prescott in free agency next March, perhaps on a shorter deal that he might prefer. They could still ultimately take a quarterback somewhere in the draft too. But Prescott is just 27 years old, so he could be the guy to hold down the fort in 2021 (and well beyond) for Washington.
