How could Dwayne Haskins beat out Joe Burrow at Ohio State but not Kyle Allen on Washington?

Dwayne Haskins won the starting job at Ohio State over Joe Burrow but is now being benched by the Washington Football Team in favor of Kyle Allen.

Former first round pick Dwayne Haskins is no longer the starting quarterback for the Washington Football Team after the former Ohio State star was benched in favor of Kyle Allen

Haskins hasn’t been terrible four weeks in, tossing for 939 yards, four touchdowns, and three interceptions, but only leading his team to a 1-3 record (which up until the Eagles’ Sunday night win was enough to keep Washington in first place).

Ron Rivera decided he had seen enough of Haskins though and has sent him to the bench while allowing former Panthers quarterback Allen to take over at quarterback for the Football Team. This is simply too soon for Washington to be benching Haskins, as they haven’t given him much talent during his short time there.

Haskins showed just how good of a quarterback he could be during the 2018 season at Ohio State where he threw for over 4,700 yards, 48 touchdowns, and just eight interceptions. What’s even more interesting about his time there is that he was able to beat out future LSU superstar and 2020 No. 1 overall pick Joe Burrow for the starting gig at Ohio State, which led to Burrow’s transfer to LSU.

Dwayne Haskins once beat out Joe Burrow but can’t hold off Kyle Allen in the NFL

Burrow, as we know, went on to be quite the sensation after he transferred to LSU and it’s crazy to think that he was unable to beat out Haskins for the starting job in Columbus. Burrow has already had a much better start to his NFL career too, as he’s given Bengals fans hope. Washington fans can’t necessarily say the same thing, but Haskins doesn’t have much talent surrounding him, so the blame can’t entirely be placed on him.

His best weapon on offense has been another former Buckeye, Terry McLaurin, who has accounted for 387 yards and a touchdown, which is head and shoulders better than what the rest of the offense has done. Washington can’t expect Haskins to succeed when they don’t give him much help in the passing game, but here we are.

Allen isn’t the future of the Football Team yet he’s getting the keys to the offense now that Haskins is heading to the bench. Allen hasn’t been great during his two years in the pros and he got more of an opportunity to prove himself in Carolina last year, throwing for 3,322 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions while rushing for another two scores with his legs.

If Rivera really thinks Allen is an upgrade over Haskins, then maybe Washington won’t be taking the next step with their new head coach. Haskins is a promising talent who simply hasn’t had the tools around him to succeed. He was crazy talented at Ohio State, beating out the eventual 2020 No. 1 overall pick, and is already being given up on. No wonder Washington can’t get over the hump.
