NFL MVP stock watch, Week 5: Russell Wilson, Josh Allen say hello
By Dustin Baker
It’s clear two quarterbacks on opposite ends of the country are the frontrunners for the NFL MVP after four weeks.
This is the fifth installment of FanSided‘s 17-part series of MVP award analysis.
Each week, the top five players in contention to take home the NFL’s most esteemed individual award are examined.
The series is a running tabulation of statistics, player performance, and of course, impact on team success. In that respect, this analysis should be considered a linear or non-episodic process. For example, had a running back like the Colts’ Jonathan Taylor notched over 200 rushing yards and a few touchdowns this week, he would be deserving of a seat at the table.
Other players currently on the fringe of MVP candidacy include Ryan Tannehill, Dalvin Cook, and Ben Roethlisberger. Also, a mini-case for Myles Garrett could be devised if the NFL actually gave the award to defenders.
Going forward to remain on the MVP Stock Watch, players must continue their high-octane success on a weekly basis. If a player plays woefully in a given week, he will probably be jettisoned for awhile until his performance merits re-seeding.
The participants in this week’s Stock Watch remains the same as last week (but they did move around). Not one man struggled and is, therefore, more than worthy of a spot in this week’s edition. That’s probably why they’re MVP contenders.
After Week 4, here are the top five MVP award contenders for 2020.
**Please note: This series will consider sportsbooks odds but will largely weigh individual statistics and impact on the team by the particular player.
