Umpire Dan Bellino screwed over Adam Duvall by losing track of the count (Video)
In Game 2 of the Marlins-Braves playoff series, umpire Dan Bellino seriously screwed up.
The best outing for an umpire is when they’re unnoticed. Tuesday’s outing between the Marlins and the Braves was not the best outing for umpire Dan Bellino.
Somehow, someway Bellino lost track of the count during Adam Duvall’s second-inning at-bat, gifting the Marlin’s an inning-ending out.
As the video shows, the at-bat included a first-pitch ball, then a strike on a foul ball, another ball, a strike as Duvall chased a sinker, then two successive balls. That should have ended it with a walk.
No matter how you slice it its a terrible look for the MLB umpires. The Braves wrongly had their inning ended, giving the Marlins an unearned advantage. It could have gone wrong on the other side as well. What if Duvall’s deep shot had made it into the stands? That would have been an unearned home run for Atlanta.
Adam Duvall and the Braves made Dan Bellino’s mistake mercifully immaterial
The mistake should never happen, particularly in a playoff game. There should be some failsafe to prevent an extra pitch from ever being thrown. Someone should have caught it.
The only positive for everyone involved is the missed count ultimately didn’t matter.
The Braves went on to score another run in the fourth while blanking the Marlins on the score sheet.
MLB should be thanking their lucky stars for the Braves pitching staff. Ian Anderson got the win with 5.2 innings pitched. He struck out eight and allowed three hits. The Atlanta bullpen then took care of business by allowing no hits for the rest of the game.
Atlanta is now ahead 2-0 in the series, presenting Miami with a win-or-go-home scenario on Thursday. Sixto Sanchez will be on the mound for the Marlins gainst Kyle Wright for the Braves.
