Does winning a second ring make Rajon Rondo a Hall-of-Famer?

Would Rajon Rondo be a Hall-of-Famer with a second NBA championship?

The Los Angeles Lakers have two Hall of Fame locks on their team in LeBron James and Dwight Howard, as well as a guy who is on track to end up in Springfield in Anthony Davis. If the Lakers are able to pull out title No. 17 against the Heat, that could be the catalyst that ignites Rajon Rondo’s Hall of Fame case.

Rondo is in the middle of his 14th NBA season, and he’s piled up enough accolades to get the voters in Springfield interested in making him a Hall-of-Famer. Getting a second ring would certainly change some undecided hearts and minds in control of the votes.

Rondo’s averages of 10.2 points, 8.3 assists and 4.7 rebounds per game might look underwhelming to some, but he’s mixed in four All-Star appearances, four All-Defensive team nominations and three assist titles. Despite his numbers, it’ll be hard for Rondo to convince anyone that he was a bigger part of the Boston Celtics‘ 2007-08 title team than Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett or Ray Allen.

Having said that, Rondo is one of the best defensive point guards of the last two decades, one of the best rebounding point guards of the modern era, and one of the best passers of all time. His pedestrian stats and gap in the middle of his career in between his Celtics and Lakers stints might be enough to keep him out of the Hall, but he will have a much stronger case if the Lakers can put this Finals away.

Getting into Springfield will be tough for Rondo, as he falls into that Toni Kukoc/Michael Cooper role in that he was a great role player on great teams for a long time, but never a leading star. However, his accolades are getting more numerous with each passing season, and he will get some consideration. If the Lakers close out the Finals, it may be time to consider him for the Hall of Fame.
