Georgia head coach Kirby Smart was understandably furious with George Pickens, who was hit with a penalty for spraying water on Tennessee quarterback Jarrett Guarantano
The No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs ended up cruising to a big-time victory over the No. 11 Tennessee Volunteers on Saturday, dominating play in the second half to power them to their 44-21 victory. Kirby Smart was obviously all smiles following the win.
However, he was also pretty darn disappointed in one of his players following the final whistle as well. That player would be George Pickens. So, why is Smart so upset?
Well, Pickens thought it would be a good idea to spray Jarrett Guarantano with his water bottle when the Tennessee quarterback was tackled on the Bulldogs’ sideline. Pickens was then immediately hit with a 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty.

George Pickens’ mental mistake surely fired up Kirby Smart in the win over Tennessee
After the win, Smart didn’t hold back in going after Pickens, really blasting him for costing his team 15 yards for that silly incident.
“It’s just disappointing,” Smart said via 247Sports. “It’s silly behavior. It’s immature, just like two guys running down to celebrate with Jalen Carter. That cost us a Tennessee game already once. What are we thinking? We show that once a year to talk about when your buddy scores, celebrate on the sideline with him. When somebody comes out of bounds and you squirt water at them, what are we? Are we seven, eight years old? I mean, come on. Let’s play football. Let’s don’t be silly.”
Despite Pickens’ lapse in judgement, the Bulldogs went on to outscore the Vols 27-0 in the second half en route to their monstrous SEC win. With the victory, Georgia is now a perfect 3-0 on the season. Moving forward, Pickens would be wise to leave opposing players alone on the sideline. Otherwise, he may be in for another tongue-lashing from Smart.
