Cowboys sign QB to complete depth chart after Dak Prescott injury
The Cowboys raided another team’s practice squad to round out their new QB depth chart without Dak Prescott
Garrett Gilbert, come on down!
The Dallas Cowboys are set to sign the quarterback from the Browns practice squad to fill the roster spot left by Dak Prescott, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL.com.
Gilbert will serve as the third-string quarterback for the Cowboys, behind starter Andy Dalton and presumptive backup Ben DiNucci.
The Cowboys QB depth chart is full once more without Dak Prescott
Prescott suffered a terrible-looking ankle injury on Sunday and had to undergo surgery by the end of the night. His 2020 season is over.
Dalton took over for Prescott against the Giants and managed to lead them to a 37-24 victory. He was signed in the offseason as a break-glass-in-case-of-emergency option behind Prescott and that’s exactly what he’s become.
Behind Dalton, there may be a battle between DiNucci and Gilbert to claim the backup role.
The Cowboys picked up DiNucci in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft out of James Madison.
Working in Gilbert’s favor is his experience. He was a sixth-round selection by the Rams in 2014 but bounced around the league with the Patriots, Lions and Raiders before making his first career appearance with the Panthers in 2018.
When the Panthers waived him, he landed on his feed with the Orlando Apollos in the AAF. That league failed miserably but Gilbert’s time there was ultimately a victory for his career. He performed well and ended up with the Browns when the league folded. Of course, Cleveland opted to carry just two quarterbacks on their roster and Gilbert ended up on the practice squad.
Dallas could go with the safe choice to backup Dalton or they could put their faith in the quarterback they just drafted. With any luck, the decision will be a moot point. The Cowboys have already dealt with more devastating quarterback injuries than they’d like.
