Veteran quarterback Drew Brees faces off against rookie Justin Herbert on the Week 5 edition of Monday Night Football
The New Orleans Saints have been chomping at the bit since Thursday evening after watching the rival Tampa Bay Buccaneers fall to the Chicago Bears. If they win, they will share first place in the NFC South. However, they’ll have to defeat the team that gave the Buccaneers fits in Week 4: the Los Angeles Chargers.
Last week, the Saints overcame a 14-0 deficit to the Detroit Lions and managed to narrowly hold on for the 35-29 win. Quarterback Drew Brees took a back seat to the Saints rushing attack of Alvin Kamara and Latavius Murray. The duo accounted for 147 yards and three touchdowns on 33 carries. The Saints might have to go with their rushing attack again, as the team will be without star receiver Michael Thomas, who was suspended after getting into a fight with defensive back Chauncey Gardner-Johnson this past week. Yet, rushing on the Chargers defense isn’t an ideal strategy. Despite surrendering 110.8 ground yards per game, they’ve only allowed one rushing touchdown this year.
In Week 4 of this NFL season, the Chargers held a 24-7 lead at one point over the Buccaneers, but collapsed in the second half due to an angry and motivated Tom Brady and took the 38-31 loss. Herbert had himself a game, as he completed 20-of-25 pass attempts for 290 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Herbert faces a pretty favorable matchup against the Saints pass defense. While New Orleans has surrendered 236.8 passing yards per game, they have given up 11 touchdowns through the air.
