Trevor Lawrence focused on Clemson’s success more than his Heisman glory

No Clemson football player has ever won the Heisman Trophy but that could change this year with quarterback Trevor Lawrence the favorite to win, but he doesn’t think about it.

Would you believe no one from Clemson has ever won the Heisman Trophy? It’s a strange but true fact for the modern blue blood program, but that could change this year with Trevor Lawrence and Travis Etienne among the leading candidates.

But if you ask Lawrence his thoughts on the Heisman, he’s deferred attention and deflected it to his teammate, saying Etienne is the best player he’s seen in college football, and secondly, he’s much more focused on getting back to the National Championship Game and bringing another title back to Clemson.

“I really don’t,” Lawrence said when asked if he thinks about the Heisman, via The Athletic’s Grace Raynor.” Obviously, I can’t sit here and say it wouldn’t be awesome and really cool to win the award, but I just want to win (games). … I’ve realized that I’d rather play an OK game and win than play a great game and lose.”

Trevor Lawrence not worried about the Heisman Trophy race

What Lawrence said is a typical response from what we’ve known and seen from him during the last three years. He’s been focused on team goals and team accomplishments and hasn’t given any sort of attention or a second thought to his individual accolades. Whether it was him leading Clemson to the national title as a freshman, the first quarterback to do that since 1985, or throwing for a then-freshman record 30 touchdowns, Lawrence has been all about the name on the front of the jersey than on the back.

And it’s that attitude that goes into making Lawrence the generational prospect that he is. Sure, his talent on the field is a significant reason for that but his personality and what drives him and motivates him is why he’s had so much success, why people love to play with him and why coaches love to coach him.

Despite all that, Lawrence may still win the Heisman, if Etienne doesn’t beat him out for it, that is.
