Senator Ben Sasse obliterates the Houston Astros for being dirty, rotten cheaters.
It was unconventional, but Senator Ben Sasse owned the Houston Astros trying to prove a point.
During Amy Coney Barrett’s Supreme Court Justice confirmation trials, the Nebraska Senator used the Astros as a punching bag to get to a roundabout point. It was completely out of left field, just like banging on trash cans and using buzzers at Minute Maid Park to know when the pitch was coming. Barrett got what Sasse was trying to say, but good lord, you have to hear his quote.
“I’d like to talk about the Houston Astros, who are miserable cheaters,” said Sasse. “I think all baseball fans know that the Astros cheat. They steal signs. They bang on cans. They’ve done a whole bunch of miserable things, historically.”
“They deserve to be punished probably more than they have been…We can’t have two sets of rules, right?…I think some of what we’ve seen in the questions over the last three days are trying to get an umpire to agree to a different set of rules for different teams.”
Leave it to a U.S. Senator to pile on the Houston Astros’ 2020 ALCS misery.
The reigning AL Champions and 2017 World Series Champions are one loss away from being swept in the 2020 ALCS by the top-seeded Tampa Bay Rays. Even though Kevin Cash’s team has been the best team in the Junior Circuit this season, this whole ALCS has been about everybody outside of Houston praying the Astros don’t get back to the World Series and win a championship.
Many people believe the Astros were let off easy, as they didn’t have to play in front of fans this season and none of the players were punished as a result of what happened back in 2017. Though they weren’t a great team this season, the No. 6 seed in the AL advanced to the ALCS by defeating the No. 3 Minnesota Twins in their Wild Card series and the No. 2 Oakland Athletics in the ALDS.
Even though Sasse represents a state with no major professional teams and where Nebraska Cornhuskers football reigns supreme, the Astros’ cheating scandal is a national story that everyone is well aware of. It was a bit of a reach of an analogy for Barrett to get, but she got it nevertheless. We are thankful this viral video now exists on the internet from the trials.
Everybody outside of the Astros fan base can laugh at what Sasse said to Barrett on Wednesday.
