Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence joined some elite quarterback company with his dominant first-half performance vs. Georgia Tech.
Trevor Lawrence threw his first interception in 364 days in the first half vs. Georgia Tech but other than that, the Clemson quarterback has been close to perfect.
With 391 yards and five touchdowns in the first two quarters, Lawrence has nearly four times as much offense as the Yellow Jackets. But he’s also put himself in some elite company with quarterbacks who have thrown for that many yards and that many touchdowns in a first half.
The most recent quarterback to pull off this feat is reigning Heisman winner Joe Burrow who was also the No. 1 pick of the Cincinnati Bengals, and who beat Lawrence’s Tigers in the National Championship Game.

And reigning Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes did it while at Texas Tech. Any time you’re lumped together with Burrow and Mahomes, you know you’ve done something special. And special is a word often used when talking about the Heisman front-runner who could add a second national title to his resume this season.
Mason Rudolph also did it while at Oklahoma State.

On a day and in a career flush with insane throws, this one, however, may be one of his best.

The five touchdowns by Lawrence are a new career-high and with the game out of hand, he may not play much in the second half, but Dabo Swinney may elect to keep him out for a few more series to see if he can get over 400 yards and a sixth touchdown.
