Former Alabama football players disgusted with defense vs. Georgia
By John Buhler
Alabama football may no longer be a defense-first college football program.
A pair of former Alabama football standouts do not like what they see out of the defense.
Baltimore Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey and Chicago Bears free safety Eddie Jackson were watching the No. 2 Alabama Crimson Tide take on the No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs on TV like the rest of us. Alabama has long been a strong defensive-minded team under head coach Nick Saban. Alabama trailed Georgia 24-20 at halftime and Humphrey and Jackson voiced their frustrations.

Will this defense end up costing Alabama in this game or further down the line?
Alabama allowed 268 yards of offense, including 91 on the ground in the first half. While Crimson Tide quarterback Mac Jones played very well and so did running back Najee Harris, Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett IV and running back James Cook were a big reason the Dawgs took a four-point lead into halftime on the road at Bryant-Denny. Should Alabama be worried here?
It’s hard to say because while as good of a halftime adjustor as Georgia head coach Kirby Smart is, his mentor Nick Saban is every bit as good at that for the Crimson Tide. Georgia receives the kickoff in the second half, as the Dawgs look to expand on their four-point lead heading into the third quarter. There is plenty of football left in this game, so either team could end up winning it.
However, there will come a point this season where Alabama’s defensive lapses will come back to haunt them. It could be in this game, it might come later in the regular season, it may occur in a potential rematch in the 2020 SEC Championship or it could happen in the College Football Playoff. Though Alabama remains undefeated, this defense is far from perfect and will be an issue.
Alabama better make halftime adjustments because Georgia will be making them as well tonight.
