Heisman Trophy candidate No. 4: Shane Buechele, QB, SMU

Yes, Shane Buechele comes in at No. 4 in the Heisman Trophy rankings after Week 7. The SMU quarterback is at the helm of a 5-0 team, which undoubtedly doesn’t hurt his case. But more than that, the experienced signal-caller is the heartbeat of the Mustangs offense, which he once again put on display on Friday night in a nail-biting win over Tulane.

In the victory, Buechele threw for 384 yards with two touchdowns on the night, dicing up the Green Wave defense seemingly at will throughout the night. Over five games, Buechele has thrown for 1,710 yards with 12 touchdowns and just two interceptions, throwing for over 340 yards against every FBS opponent the Mustangs have faced. If he and SMU can stay on this pace, how can you not have him as a legitimate Heisman candidate?

Heisman Trophy candidate No. 3: Zach Wilson, QB, BYU

Speaking of quarterbacks for undefeated teams outside of the Power 5, BYU Cougars signal-caller Zach Wilson might be the best player in the country that not enough people are talking about. Nicknamed the Mormon Manziel, the junior quarterback has been absolutely phenomenal both in terms of his production and his entertainment value in leading the Cougs to a 5-0 start, most recently beating Houston on Friday night.

Wilson carved up the Houston defense with a 25-of-35 for 400 yards and four touchdowns. In five games, Wilson now has 1,641 yards passing with 12 touchdowns and only one pick while completing an impressive 78.7 percent of his passes. Throw in 100 rushing yards and six more touchdowns and Wilson has been tearing it up. With the level he’s playing at and as he draws more eyes, Wilson is in line to be a legitimate Heisman dark horse.
