1. Raheem Mostert (SF)

Game: Los Angeles Rams at San Francisco 49ers (Sunday, 10/18, 8:20 pm EST)

Mostert can get away with the sleeper designation because the 49ers have about a dozen competent running backs in their organization. That’s hyperbole, but you know what we’re getting at.

While Mostert was injured, fellow tailbacks Jerick McKinnon and Jeff Wilson picked up the slack admirably. Now, though, Mostert is back and presumably excited about his shot at being the quasi-RB1.

This week, the Rams travel a smidgen to Santa Clara to take on division foes, the 49ers. The Rams are unexpectedly hot and would be a shoo-in for the playoffs if those games started today. In Week 6, the Rams will face a getting-pretty-desperate San Francisco team. The 49ers are 2-3 and in 10th place in the NFC’s postseason seeding.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan won’t abandon the run, though. Start Mostert in hopes Shanahan will try to get creative offensively vs. Los Angeles.

2. Frank Gore (NYJ)

Game: New York Jets at Miami Dolphins (Sunday, 10/18, 4:05 pm EST)

The Jets canceled Le’Veon Bell, so that leaves Frank Gore and his young friends. The franchise, as a whole, seems to be in total disarray. Of course, that means starting a 35-year-old running back each week.

That’s not a knock on Gore. The man has had a marvelous career. Games in which he has humongous outputs are likely gone, but he will get more carries now by default. New York plays Miami in Week 6 — one of the week’s most bland matchups.

The Dolphins have allowed eight rushing touchdowns, the sixth-most in the NFL. Let’s start Gore because the rushing yards will have to go somewhere.
