After another disappointing showing in Week 6 against the Baltimore Ravens, the Philadelphia Eagles need to consider firing both Doug Pederson and Howie Roseman.
It feels like one million years ago that the Philadelphia Eagles took down the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl back in February of 2018. While it was obviously going to be tough for Philadelphia to get back to the promise land, the team has been incredibly disappointing since then.
On Sunday, the Eagles saw their record fall to 1-4-1 following a frustrating loss to the Baltimore Ravens. In the defeat, Carson Wentz had arguably his worst game of the season. With fans calling for Jalen Hurts to start and Wentz to hit the bench, it’s making Doug Pederson look worse by the second.
Not only him, but also Howie Roseman, who did nothing during the offseason to help this team be extra competitive. With the season looking all but lost at this point, it really feels like Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie must consider making an incredibly tough decision: firing both of them.
Big changes may need to be on the way for the Eagles after what’s been an awful 2020 season
In a completely open NFC East this season, the Eagles have easily been the most disappointing squad. Each week they’ve taken the field, they’ve looked unprepared and almost with no energy to try and compete for a victory. That’s all on Pederson. It’s his job to have his guys ready to go from the opening kick.
Wentz’s struggles is also something no one really expected for this campaign. He truly looked horrendous in the lopsided loss to the Ravens. What’s Pederson waiting for in making a switch at quarterback? When Hurts did get the ball in his hands against the Ravens, he broke free for a 20-yard run, giving the offense a much-needed spark. With Wentz, you fear he’s going to turn the ball over whenever he takes off and runs.
What about the injuries? Well, the Eagles have completely blown it in this department, especially with how they’ve handled both Alshon Jeffery and DeSean Jackson. Losing both those players for an extended period of time has been catastrophic for the offense.
As for Roseman, while his gutsy calls helped bring a Super Bowl to Philadelphia, some have also backfired for the current team’s roster. With the Eagles projected to be $67 million over the cap for 2021, that means some players will either have to take pay cuts, or the team will need to release some guys to try and save some serious dough.
With the way this team is built, it looks like they’re set to be bad for a while, with a rebuild potentially on the way. That’s all on Roseman. And with this season going from bad to worse by each week, both Pederson and his GM must take responsibility for what’s going on.
If things keep going in this direction, and it’s hard to envision they won’t, Eagles fans may start calling for both Pederson and Roseman to lose their jobs. They’ll have every right to.
