Magician Patrick Mahomes pulls vanishing act to set up TD against Bills
Patrick Mahomes magicked his way into a five-yard gain on third down against the Bills to set up a touchdown for the Chiefs.
Patrick Mahomes is such a spectacular playmaker, even when he fails to get a first down it’s a highlight.
The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback literally turned nothing into something against the Bills on Monday.
The Chiefs faced a third-and-5 which seemed to be going nowhere as Mahomes took off to the outside. The defense had the sideline covered. Mahomes had to bail. It looked like a sure stop likely to result in a field goal attempt.
Then Mahomes happened.
Watching the clip on a loop still doesn’t explain how Mahomes managed to come within inches of converting the third down.
For Kansas City, it was a good thing he did. Andy Reid was game to go for the fourth-and-1 conversion, calling for a handoff to Darrel Williams. He burst free for a touchdown to put the Chiefs up 20-10.
Even the small gains are highlights for Patrick Mahomes
Mahomes showed his value in what was supposed to be a major quarterback matchup between the Chiefs and the Bills. With Josh Allen struggling on the other side, it’s clear who came out on top in that one.
Travis Kelce caught two touchdown passes from Mahomes before the first half was up, while the third-quarter score gave the Chiefs some much-needed breathing room.
Having said that, it was the Kansas City rushing attack that took center stage. The Chiefs gained more than 200 yards on the ground with Clyde Edwards-Helaire claiming a starring role. Mahomes pitched in a few gains as well.
Mahomes and company bounced back well from last week’s 40-32 loss to the Raiders. It was their first of the season. It was less of a recovery week for the Bills, who were blown out by the Titans last week.
