Patrick Mahomes is still leaps and bounds ahead of Josh Allen.

We don’t usually get late-afternoon NFL football on Mondays, but this is 2020. Fans were hyped to sit on their couches and watch the Kansas City Chiefs face off against the Buffalo Bills for AFC dominance. More importantly, it was a battle between two of the league’s best quarterbacks statistically in Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen.

The game didn’t really live up to the hype, but the Chiefs managed to weather the elements and handily defeat the Bills 26-17 to improve their record to 5-1. More importantly, Mahomes proved that he’s still leaps and bounds ahead of Allen at the quarterback position.

Patrick Mahomes thrived in the weather, while Josh Allen struggled

Bills fans will bring up how Allen struggled to throw the ball accurately due to the sloppy weather in Buffalo, but there’s literally no excuse for him, because Mahomes was doing just fine in the rain.

On 27 pass attempts, Allen was only able to complete 14 of them for 122 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. The tone was set after he failed to connect on his first four passes of the game. Meanwhile, Mahomes successfully converted on 21-of-26 pass attempts for 225 yards and two touchdowns. If Mahomes was able to throw accurately in the drizzling rain, there’s no excuse for Allen.

Perhaps the most interesting statistic from the Monday matchup is that Chiefs head coach Andy Reid and offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy called a majority of rushing plays throughout the game. 46, to be exact. Meanwhile, the Bills called slightly more passing plays than rushing plays (23). So  Mahomes took a backseat to his running backs, and he still outproduced Allen!

Mahomes has made a career out of showing up for the biggest games of the season against the strongest opponents in the league. As for Allen, he couldn’t keep up with the Tennessee Titans in Week 5 and now against the Chiefs on Monday. While there’s still plenty of time for the Bills quarterback to develop, he’s still not in the same league as Mahomes. End the MVP debates now.
