Newton might be the most intriguing free agent set to hit the open market. He’s in the process of completely rebuilding his value with the Patriots. Ironically, that could also put him outside New England’s price range when he hits the open market.

Newton isn’t going to consider going to any team that isn’t an immediate Super Bowl contender. The Colts happen to fit that description. Indianapolis also will be in the market for a new starting quarterback capable of helping them win right away in 2021.

Indianapolis might prefer to sign someone who isn’t as much of an injury risk, but their options in free agency will be limited. That makes Newton the best possible solution for Frank Reich and his coaching staff.

To get a deal done, the Colts will likely have to give Newton a multi-year deal that pays him like an above-average starting quarterback. That might be a slight overpay, but it’s a risk worth taking for Indianapolis. Newton’s ability to keep the chains moving with both his legs will be a big boost to the Colts offense.
