2021 NFL Free Agency predictions: Quarterbacks will be on the move
22. Philip Rivers goes to Washington as a stopgap
The Colts gave Rivers a big one-year deal in the hope that he could bring them a Super Bowl title. He’s looked average at best during his brief time in Indianapolis. That means Rivers will be added to the group of signal callers that are shopping for a starting job in the offseason.
Ron Rivera is one head coach who would love to see a veteran come in and stabilize the game’s most important position for his team. Washington should be looking to use a first round pick on their franchise quarterback of the future, but Rivera isn’t going to rush that player onto the field. Instead, look for Washington to ink a veteran to keep the job warm.
Rivers isn’t going to be a star at this stage of his career, but he can be an adult in the room to help Washington’s offense progress to proficiency. His penchant for turnovers is a real problem, but Rivera won’t ask him to take many risks down the field. That gives him a chance at a mini-revival in the nation’s capital.
Rivers doesn’t seem like a guy who will be satisfied with a backup job, so it may be starter or bust for him in free agency. Landing in Washington might be his only option of securing a first-team spot.
