The Champions League group stage begins on Tuesday with Lazio hosting Borussia Dortmund at Stadio Olimpico in Rome. Lazio are in the Champions League for the first time since 2007 and will look to advance out of the group stage for the first time since the 1999-00 season. Dortmund are in the group stage for the fifth straight season and will look to advance to the knockout stage for the third consecutive season.

Lazio finished fourth last season in Serie A to qualify for the Champions League. Former Dortmund striker Ciro Immobile was a large reason why Lazio finished in the top four. The Italian striker tied the record for the most goals in a Serie A season with 36. This season, Lazio and Immobile have gotten off to a poor start in Serie A, picking up only four points in their first four games.

Dortmund are the favorites to win the group and expect to make a deep run in the knockout stage. They have gotten off to a good start, picking up nine points in their first four games. Erling Haaland and Jadon Sancho headline an exciting Dortmund attack that should score several goals this season. However, the question for Dortmund’s defense remains the same. Dortmund’s shortcomings in recent years have been their leaky defenses. Manager Lucien Favre will have to make a patchwork backline in the opening game of the group stage. Marcel Schmelzer, Nico Schulz, Manuel Akanji, and Dan-Axel Zagadou are among the defenders who could miss Tuesday’s game.
