The Champions League group stage begins on Wednesday with Inter Milan hosting Borussia Monchengladbach at the San Siro. Inter qualified for the Champions League after finishing second in Serie A last season, while Gladbach were a surprising fourth-place finisher in the Bundesliga.
Inter Milan are among the historical European heavyweights. However, in the Champions League, Inter have faltered in recent seasons. The club failed to get out of the group stage the last two seasons and have not reached the knockout stage since 2012. Antonio Conte’s team will be expected to get out of the group this season, but the draw has not been friendly. The other two teams in the group, Real Madrid and Shakhtar Donetsk, are both capable of going through. Inter will rely heavily on their talented front two of Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez, who have combined for seven goals. The duo will have to continue scoring at a high pace if Inter are going to get out of the group stage.
Borussia Monchengladbach return to the Champions League for the first time since 2016. In their two previous Champions League appearances, the Foals have failed to get out of the group stage. It will be a very difficult task for Monchengladbach, who have gotten off to a poor start to the season. The Foals are 11th in the Bundesliga after picking up just five points in their first four games. Gladbach have only scored five goals this season and will have to increase their scoring output if they are going to get out of the group stage. Jonas Hofmann and Marcus Thuram have been involved in almost every goal for Gladbach. Hofmann and Thuram have combined for two goals and five assists and will play key roles on Wednesday.
