MLB Rumors: 5 players the Yankees will target in Free Agency
The Yankees spent big on Gerrit Cole last offseason, but that doesn’t mean the club’s investment in the starting rotation is over. The fact that Tanaka, James Paxton, and J.A. Happ are all ticketed for free agency means Cashman will consider adding another big-ticket starter before the 2021 season kicks off.
Stroman opted out of the 2020 campaign for the Mets which puts him in a unique position on the open market. He doesn’t have recent performance to fall back on, but teams will love the miles on his arm that he saved by taking last season off.
The Mets figure to be strong contenders to ink him to a long-term deal, but the Yankees have the financial power to match their offer. It’s very easy to envision a scenario where he opts for the Bronx over Queens simply due to the quality of the two rosters in question.
Stroman isn’t the same sort of ace that Cole is, but he’s a solid No. 2 or No. 3 starter who has the chops to help New York when the postseason rolls around. That’s why he’ll be a player the Yankees keep a close eye on as free agency begins.
