Real Madrid face Shakhtar Donetsk at Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday, Oct. 21. Here’s all the info you need to watch.

The Champions League group stage begins on Wednesday with Real Madrid welcoming Shakhtar Donetsk to the Santiago Bernabeu. Real have been in the Champions League every season since the 1995-96 season. Shakhtar are in the Champions League for the fourth straight season and the 15th time since 2000.

Real Madrid have made it out of the group stage every season since 1995 but have failed to make it past the round of 16 the last two seasons. For Real Madrid, failing to make it deep into the knockout stage is very disappointing. After winning La Liga last season, Real believe they can make a deep run this season. However, they head into their first game of the group stage with several key players sidelined. Eden Hazard, Martin Odegaard, Daniel Carvajal and Alvaro Odriozola will all miss the game against Shakhtar. With both of his right-backs injured, manager Zinedine Zidane will make to change his formation or play someone out of position. This could leave Real vulnerable defensively.

Shakhtar Donetsk have not advanced past the group stage since 2018 when they were eliminated in the round of 16 by Roma. Domestically, Donetsk have dominated the Ukrainian Premier League, winning four straight titles and looking for their fifth in a row. Shakhtar could be without their leading scorer, Viktor Kovalenko, who is dealing with an injury. If Kovalenko cannot play, it would be a significant blow to Shakhtar’s chances of stealing a point. Should Kovalenko not be able to play, it will create a brighter spotlight for 20-year-old Brazilian winger Tete, who is a highly regarded prospect.
