Alabama football receiver Jaylen Waddle injured his right ankle on the opening kickoff vs. Tennessee and left the game with the help of trainers.

Jaylen Waddle has been one of the best receivers in college football and the rare pass-catcher to be a legitimate Heisman candidate. Unfortunately, Waddle was injured on the opening kickoff vs. Tennessee when his right ankle was rolled up on after he was tackled by the Vols defender.

Waddle had to go to the locker room for further evaluation and appeared unable to put any weight on his ankle. He was then taken off on a cart which he smacked in frustration. CBS reported he is questionable to return but after an ambulance came to take him to the hospital, he’s not returning to the game.

The replay of the kickoff can be seen above.

Update: Nick Saban told CBS at halftime that Waddle is out for the season.

It was a clean play so there was nothing cheap or dirty on the tackle by the Tennessee player. This is just an unfortunate reality that football players get hurt and it stinks when they’re really great players like Waddle.

Waddle was an All-American returner last year and has 25 receptions for 557 yards and four touchdowns in four games as one of the leading targets for Mac Jones opposite DeVonta Smith.
